A great canvas can still look wrong on a wall if it hangs at the wrong height or sits alone in a big room. Here is the short, practical version of what gallery people know about hanging.
The 57-inch rule
Center of the canvas at 57-60 inches from the floor. That is average eye level, and it is the standard galleries use. Measure the canvas height, divide by two, and put that point at 57 inches.
Above furniture
Hang 6-8 inches above the back of a sofa or headboard. The canvas should feel connected to the furniture, not floating above it.
Size vs wall
Cover about two-thirds of the wall space above your furniture. One 24x36 canvas beats three small prints fighting for attention.
Multiple canvases
Treat the group as one unit. Keep 2-3 inches between pieces, align the centers rather than the tops, and level across the whole group. Mark the wall with painter's tape before driving hooks.
Hardware basics
- Gallery-wrapped canvases usually ship with a wire or sawtooth hanger installed.
- Up to 16x24, a single picture hook rated for 20 lb is enough.
- 20x30 and up: two hooks, spaced a third of the canvas width apart.
